The importance of a balanced pelvic floor
The pelvic floor muscles are the bottom part of our CORE musculature, they become activated with every movement that we do in order to keep us stable… or this is how it should be! The main reason for working the pelvic floor is to learn to control them.
This allows us to avoid problems with urination or bowel movements, and have a happy intimate life avoiding also problem during sexual intercourse.
If we injured the pelvic floor muscles it’s possible to have problems like pelvic pain or low back pain, because these muscles also stabilize and support the spine.
We generally hear about the pelvic floor muscles training for pregnant women, and we know that those who work the pelvic floor have faster and easier deliveries. This happens because a balanced pelvic floor musculature prevents tearing during the delivery, and also avoids postpartum problems such as prolapse, urinary incontinence and low back pain. In addition, working the pelvic floor is necessary to avoid a non functional abdominal diastasis.
Men can also suffer pelvic floor dysfunctions related with pelvic pain, urinary incontinence and sexual problems. This problems generally appear after an oncological process as a radical prostatectomy, and its important to start with a program before the surgery to try to avoid this symptomatology. In certain situation men are more likely to suffer a pelvic floor dysfunction, for example those who smoke and practice impact sports should pay more attention to this area.
The little ones of the house may also need this kind of rehabilitation too! Those kids struggling with keeping the bed dry the hole night are the more benefitted from pelvic floor exercises , the nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) can be managed in different ways and each family can decide what’s better for their own kids.
Situations like constipation and diverse ways of urinary incontinence can be a real struggle for kids too and sometimes an unbalanced pelvic floor is the key to solve this problems.
